Talking to a British tabloid recently, Angelina Jolie said she used to be a vegan but found the no-animal products diet unhealthy, as it left her malnourished and “nearly killed” her. Probably an exaggeration, it still goes to show even Hollywood superstars like Angelina Jolie try extreme diets in the hopes of being healthy and staying thin. Angelina Jolie though sometimes has a problem being too thin, a fact pointed out by many journalists after her “Salt” premiere in Berlin, Germany.
That time though, being vegan had nothing to do with it. For the “Salt” premiere, Angelina Jolie was painfully thin because of the energy she’d expended doing all her own stunts during the filming of “Salt”. With shooting schedules of 10-12 hours a day, and much of the movie fast-paced and with lots of stunts, Jolie even went on a high-carb low-protein diet, to give her the energy needed to keep up. Add to that the energy needed to bring up six little kids, and you can only imagine how fast Angelina Jolie was burning calories. No wonder a vegan diet wouldn’t cut it.
For those who don’t know, a vegan diet is actually quite extreme and, if not followed correctly, can lead to malnourishment and severe illness. Vegans often end up in the hospital dangerously ill, and seem surprised when they find out the “healthy vegan diet” they were following, wasn’t so healthy after all.
A true vegan does not eat any meat, fish or poultry. Many also don’t consume eggs, milk or any other dairy products as they feel its cruel to the animals that produce them. With such a strict diet though, a strict vegan is only left being able to eat fruit and vegetables, whole grain products, seeds, nuts and legumes. Vegans are also often Vitamin D deficient, as none of the foods they eat naturally contain Vitamin D. If they don’t get enough sun exposure, which causes Vitamin D to be produced, Vitamin D deficiency is the result.
Looking at what a vegan can eat, it’s not surprising Angelina Jolie found it severely limiting and a cause of her malnutrition. With the kind of hectic schedule Angelina Jolie has, and being a mother to six children, she would have to eat an enormous amount of food to be able to stay within the parameters of a vegan diet. From her statement, it appears that simply wasn’t possible.
