A whimsical set of magnets is the perfect way to dress up a dorm room or cubicle space! These animal print heart magnets are great for a female magnetic board or refrigerator front.
For this project, you will need:
– Animal print fabric (zebra, leopard, giraffe, etc.)
– 1/4 inch thick wood crafting board
– Heart shaped stencil
– Fabric marking pen
– Fabric scissors
– Tool for cutting wood crafting board
– Medium or fine grit sandpaper
– Tack cloth or other soft cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a coordinating color
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Small rolling pin
– Magnetic tape strips
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Newspaper and/or drop cloth
Before starting, cover the area where you will be working with sheets of old newspaper or a large drop cloth. Lay the sheet of 1/4 inch thick wood crafting board onto the workspace. In pencil, trace the heart shapes from the stencil onto the board. Create one heart shape per finished magnet. Very carefully cut out each heart shape using a tool for cutting wood crafting board. (This can be a power tool, such as a jigsaw, or a hand tool.)
Sand the edges of each heart cutout with a sheet of medium or fine grit sandpaper. Wipe away any dust on the wood with a tack cloth or other soft cloth. Lay each heart shape flat. Prime both sides of the cutout with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Dry for an hour, apply two or more coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in a coordinating color, and leave to set overnight.
Lay the animal print fabric down flat. Use the same heart shaped stencil and a fabric marking pen to create the design onto the animal print fabric. Again, create one heart shape per magnet. Carefully cut out the fabric using fabric scissors.
Apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of one animal print heart using a sponge brush. Immediately adhere the heart shape to one of the wooden cutouts. Smooth with a small rolling pin to remove any wrinkling in the fabric. Repeat this process for all remaining heart cutouts. Dry overnight.
Apply a bit of hot glue to a piece of magnetic tape. Adhere the tape to the back of one wooden heart. Repeat with the rest. Cool completely before using your new magnets.
TIP: Instead of cutting wooden hearts from a board, also consider purchasing a package of pre-cut heart shapes from your local craft store.
