When you envision a public restroom, what do you see? Automatic paper towel dispensers, toilets that flush on their own, or maybe even the automatic sink. In many of today’s public restrooms, this is what is there. But are these really beneficial to the companies that maintain these restrooms? Is it beneficial to us, who use these restrooms?
With technology advancing in the past years, it seems natural technological devices should journey into restrooms. In many cases, this happened. From the sink to the toilet, there are automatic things everywhere. However, these aren’t always worth it for the companies taking care of these bathrooms.
With the great technology involved in automatic machines, such as motion sensors, maintenance is required. If a sensor gets smudged or cracked, it might not work properly. How would you like to be sitting on the toilet, waving your hand for the paper, when it doesn’t work? If you’re like most people, this situation wouldn’t be preferable at all. This is one of the many reasons that these may not be the best solution.
With automatic sinks, one of the reasons they were installed was to stop people from wasting water by leaving it on. However, when I am forced to use one of these, it goes for about 5 seconds, then stops. It requires some frantic hand movements, which give you some strange looks from others in the restroom, to get it to work for another 5 seconds. After doing this for the umpteenth time, it becomes a bit tedious.
One of the main reasons that these automatic utilities are so widely used is there cost. An automatic paper towel dispenser can cost as around $55 USD! This lets big corporate companies cut the cost of maintaining one expensive thing — restrooms! Another reason is that paper towel dispensers that you must crank get jammed easily. In one bathroom, the paper towel machine was jammed more often than not! This causes the companies maintaining these to have to send employees to un-jam it. The cost of this labor adds up over time, making automatic machines ideal.
Although there are many reasons for and against automatic utilities in restrooms, no one can be satisfied. If everything was turned into old-fashioned, hand machines, this would infuriate some people! Likewise, the same could be said vice versa. However, these systems get the job done.
