You’re bound to see them on the cover of an ‘Us Weekly’ or ‘OK! Magazine’ – no, not stars like Britney Spears or Jennifer Aniston, I’m talking about the girls of MTV’s hit show ‘Teen Mom’. It seems that in our new reality craze, reality stars are now becoming fixtures in the tabloids and entertainment shows, even more so than the celebrities themselves.
At one time Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s relationship was the talk of the magazines, but these days you’re more likely to see ‘Teen Mom’ star Amber and her baby on the cover, or Bravo’s ‘The Real Housewives’ Teresa or Danielle Staub. And of course how could we forget about when Jon and Kate Gosselin were going through their messy divorce – in front of the world. In fact, after a ‘Us Weekly’ cover story came out, claiming Jon was cheating on then wife Kate, their ratings for their TLC show, ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’ went through the roof. Most people didn’t even know about the show until the tabloids starting buzzing about the couple.
Maybe it’s because at this point, most of these reality stars might as well be celebrities. The higher the ratings they bring in, the more money they rank in. It’s been reported that MTV’s ‘Jersey Shore’ crew allegedly make $10,000 an episode, while the girls formerly of ‘The Hills’ made $100,000 an episode. That’s more than what some actual stars make!
Because of the huge interest in most of these reality stars, we’re now seeing them become a regular in the tabloids, some of them even claim to have “fans”. But it doesn’t always end so well. MTV’s ‘The Hills’ cast members and married couple Heidi and Spencer Pratt have reportedly blown through $10 million and are now completely broke. Spencer, who was on the cover of ‘Life&Style’, recently told the magazine about his current hard times, Pratt says, “We thought The Hills was going to be like 90210 and we’d have another five to 10 years, the ratings were consistent. But we never saw Jersey Shore coming. Before, TV audiences were fine with seeing us all argue, but now they want you to punch one another in the face and hook up with three different people. Our cast was a bit boring and snoozeworthy in comparison. No wonder we got canceled. At our lowest point, I considered posing for nude pictures in Playboy, I feel like I’m 14 years old again, my parents are my lifeline. We don’t want sympathy, we did this to ourselves and feel like idiots. But we’ve grown up and are definitely not as naive anymore.”
Just a little word of advice to most reality stars, yes, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that most of you are getting more attention than ever but you never know when your 15 minutes can be up. So to avoid the bumpy road that Spencer and Heidi have now lead themselves down, always remember to save and spend your money wisely!
