At one time, there were eight temporary selling spaces on 17th at Market and Castro. The spaces were often called a mini plaza. They were areas certified by the Arts Commission in San Francisco in order to support street artists.
The legal language that is in question concerns an exemption of those spaces from a Police Code regulation. This regulation indicates that there needs to be a set distance between one street artist and another. However, for the mini-plaza, those rules didn’t apply.
Now, the Board of Supervisors must decide if they will pass the resolution. If you have purchased art that you love at the Mini Plaza and support the resolution, let your voice be heard. In my opinion, the Mission is definitely better off with interesting and organized outdoor art spaces like the Mini Plaza.
