How does a clay pot become a house? Well, it only takes a little imagination, and a few inexpensive craft supplies, and the little house is yours! What can you do with a miniature house? It’s perfect for decorating during many different holidays, making a new centerpiece, or creating something that can be displayed any day.
Choose the size of terra cotta pot you want to use then select a saucer to go with it. The saucer should be large enough to completely cover the opening of the pot. Buy a large pot and saucer to make a centerpiece or other substantial decoration. Or, purchase small pots and saucers to make cute houses for a mantle or other area.
It doesn’t take much to actually make the house shape. First wipe the pot and saucer clean of any grit and make sure they are completely dry. Now turn the saucer upside-down on the pot and glue it in place. Check your local home improvement store for a suitable adhesive for clay pots. After the glue has set you can then decide on how to embellish the miniature house.
Paint the clay pot any color you want. For windows and doors you can purchase stickers or make the images yourself. Cut out paper windows and such from magazines or just use cellophane and tape. Glue a tiny bead on to make a doorknob or popsicle stick pieces to make window boxes.
To give the house a Christmas theme you can use white dimensional paint as snow. Glob the paint on, here and there, on the roof and down the sides a little. Make a tiny wreath to hang on the door. Encircle the pot with garland or just set it amongst some fake snow. To give the house a Halloween theme use green dimensional paint and apply it as you did the “snow”. Glue fake spiders on top, use black tape to make windows, or just paint the house black and attach eerie-looking embellishments.
The clay pot houses don’t necessarily have to be for the holidays. Use a black circle sticker to make an opening that creates a fake birdhouse. Place the sticker on the pot then glue on a small dowel as a perch. You can even glue a tiny bird to the perch.
Using stickers, colored tape, colored cellophane, buttons, lace, paint and similar craft supplies you can make any number of houses that are perfect for holiday decorating or for starting a new, mini house collection!
