Many times Royal Oak parents leave the house in fear of getting locked up because they left their eldest child, or maybe a neighbor’s child, to care for their younger children. But what is the legal age for babysitting in Royal Oak?
Since many do not seem to know, I decided to call the non-emergency phone number for the Royal Oak police department and ask. The person who answered the phone informed me that there was no legal age; it’s whenever you think the child is old enough and responsible enough to be in charge of other children. It’s at the discretion of the parent.
Royal Oak does have codes and ordinances in regard to children, but those are more about keeping your kids under control, time curfews and breaking the law. Teenagers can be tried as an adult for serious crimes at the age of 14, but there is no law or ordinance that states at what age a child can start babysitting. However, if something really bad happens while the parents are gone and the police are involved, depending on the situation, there could be charges of neglect, endangerment or something else. Therefore, parents really do need to exercise care, caution and common sense when deciding if their child is old enough to babysit.
