An Austin shooting at the University of Texas just happened when a masked gunman entered and began firing shots before taking his own life, ABC News reports. Word is a second suspect may be on the loose and police are searching for him as the university campus remains on lockdown.

“The armed suspect is dead. No other injuries have been reported,” UT President Bill Powers wrote in a campus email.
The armed gunman was discovered dead on the sixth floor of the library, police report. He may not be the only one involved in firing shots. Authorities are combing the Austin university for another suspect who is wearing a beanie and possessing a long rifle.
“We are working the possibility of a second suspect,” said UT police chief Robert Dawson. “We’re trying to eliminate that possibility.”
A text alerted students at the University of Texas when it read, “armed subject was reported last seen at Perry Castaneda Library,” instructing students to remain where they were at that time. This happened about 8:00 a.m, central this morning.
Armed Gunman Had Long Rifle and Ski Mask On
“I was walking to class, a little late,” senior Robby Reeb told ABCNews.com. “I was walking from the business school, and a guy sprinted past me screaming, ‘There’s a guy with a gun.’ I looked up and saw a man in a ski mask, wearing a suit, and carrying an assault rifle. And I called 911.”
The man who fired the shots was confirmed by police to have carried an AK-47, a military-grade combat rifle. Two At this juncture, two crime scenes are under investigation – the university library where the man firing the shots was found dead, and the area outdoor area where he fired shots into the air.
A press conference with police was held and they didn’t confirm if the shooter was a student or what any kind of motive was.
Austin Campus on Lockdown and SWAT Teams On Board
In the meantime, SWAT teams are scurrying a search of the campus in each building. Bomb sniffing dogs have are on the scene to find out if any explosive-related articles were left behind at the University of Texas. The library has been sealed off with yellow tape as the search continues for a second suspect.
Buildings at the Austin university are either on lockdown or students have been immediately dismissed as the ongoing search continues.
Police Chief Art Acevedo told an Austin radio station in Texas, “we have a reports of a second suspect that was wearing a beanie with a long rifle, wearing blue jeans and a black top that we’re looking for that may or may not be a white male.”
This is an eery reminder of the 1966 shooting in Austin at the very same university when a gunman stood on the observation deck tower shooting and killing 14 people while injuring 32 others.
Hopefully soon the authorities will find the second suspect soon. Will the University of Texas be taking new drastic measure to prevent more shots fired at this infamous campus?
