Once again Thanksgiving is upon us. This is the time when we cook super large meals at home and our plumbing drains take a super beating with grease and other leftovers. Yes, this is the time when we wish we had a full time plumber at out house.
There are certain precautions the novice Thanksgiving cook and dish washer should take before the holiday. Here is also where just common drain stop- up prevention skills that will carry through the rest of the year.
1: The garbage disposal must be accompanied by water when in use. This helps the food go down and keeps the water flowing in the drain. This prevents food from sticking to the walls of the drains and causing a back up.
2: The garbage disposal in most cases cannot crush bone. Do not attempt to put turkey legs or what is left of a turkey into the disposal as this will cause it to possibly get jammed or simply quit working.
3: Do not try to shove food into the disposal before operating it as this will definitely clog the drain and back up the kitchen sink. Put the food in a little at a time while running water along with it always let the water run longer than the disposal to flush out the drain.
4: Do not leave loads of food on dishes that will be going into the dishwasher. Dishwashers are made to handle some food but that is about it. The drain here can stop up as well if it is neglected. Always rinse the plates and other items before loading the dishwasher. This not only helps in cleaning them but prevents drain back-ups as well. Small amounts of prevention go a long way.
5: If doing dishes by hand always use the strainer to remove food products never let food go down the drain as this can be disastrous as well as costly.
6: When washing greasy dishes and pots and pans by hand remember to run hot water down the drain when the dishes are finished and as the dish water is draining.
7: Finally to ensure the drains are clean at the end of the day take a few minutes to run hot water slowly down the garbage disposal side while it is turned on. Keep the water running and add a squirt of dish washing liquid. This will finish cleaning the drains and they will be as good as new the next day.
