I live in bare feet or sandals. Year round, I wear sandals for comfort. If you are shopping for back-to-school shoes for your fashionista and are purchasing a sandal to wear to school, consider the gladiator style sandal shoe. I know, many parents might be aghast that I should encourage or even suggest a sandal for school shoes. I’m not recommending a sandal, simply acknowledging that many students love their sandals and will wear them to school despite any parent prohibition to the contrary. So if students are going to wear a sandal to school, it may as well be a good, comfortable sandal for school. Roman gladiator sandals are a reasonable school sandal option.
Roman gladiator sandals vary greatly in design; some have high heels and some are flats. Some Roman gladiator sandals have multiple straps, others only a few. What distinguishes the Roman gladiator sandals are the back piece with attached straps that go around the ankle. As a sandal, Roman gladiators can be quite comfortable, if you like strappy footwear. Roman gladiator sandals have the advantage of being secure. Your feet won’t slide around in them as they do a mule, slide, flip flop or backless sandal. As such, Roman gladiator sandals are a better choice for sandal style school shoes.
Clearly, if the sandal is worn as a school shoe, then the high heel version of a Roman gladiator sandal is not a good option. Bad for the back, feet and legs. But the super flat style of Roman gladiator sandal isn’t ideal either. Flat shoes provide no arch support and usually have deplorable soles. Pick up a pair of shoe inserts to make any sandal or shoe more comfortable for school. Also, be sure to choose a Roman gladiator sandal with straps that will be soft and comfortable. Plastic, nylon and synthetic straps will not breathe well. They cause the foot to sweat and chafe. Many shoe straps are sewn with synthetic plastic thread that rubs on the foot. Whatever brand you choose, look for Roman gladiator sandals with comfortable straps.
