Following on the heels of Labor Day weekend and the West Indies Day Parade, another annual tradition – the first day of school – is fast approaching. Public school kids in Brooklyn return to school Wednesday, Sept. 8. Their first week will be anything but arduous, however. Monday is a national holiday, Tuesday is a teacher work day, and Thursday and Friday schools are closed for Rosh Hashanah. So the first week of school in Brooklyn consists of only one full day. This should be manageable for even the most reluctant student.
If kids manage to get through the month following the start of school they’ll be getting another day off on October 11th to celebrate Columbus Day. As teachers and students ease back into the academic year parents can settle back into their own routines and everyone can start counting the days until summer comes again.
