Groceries are an expensive part of life. The cost of food is going up at a rate faster than inflation. By changing how you shop in small ways, you can save a lot of money on your grocery bill. Here are some basic tips to follow on your next shopping trip.
Shop the Sales
Plan your meals every week around the sales in your area. By buying what is on sale, you are guaranteed to save money on your grocery bill. This will take some practice at first, but it is well worth the effort. Not only will you save money, but it will encourage you to try new dishes as well.
Shop With a List
Walking into a grocery store without a plan is like walking blind into a mind field. Your budget is going to explode! Grocery stores have too many tricks to get you to buy items you do not need. Product placement, “sales” that do not save you money, and putting more expensive items at eye level are just some of the things grocery stores do to make you spend more. If you bring a specific list with you, you are less likely to get side tracked and are likely to pay more attention to prices instead of what you need.
If you can, try to shop alone. Children and spouses always tend to run up the food bill with items that they “need”. Isn’t it amazing how they wouldn’t need it if they never saw it in the first place? Cut out this temptation all together and you will do your wallet a favor.
Switch to generic brands whenever possible. The majority of store brands these days taste just as good as the national brands and cost at least 10% less with no coupons required! If you do not end up liking the store brand, that is fine switch back, but at least try it.
For those items on your grocery list that are not generics, be sure to look for coupons. Even if you only save $.50 on a $2 item that is still 25% off! Take advantage of the coupons that are available to do and you will see your grocery bill decrease drastically.
Just because you have to buy food does not mean that you have to pay full price for it. With just a few simple changes you will see your food bill drop. Make sure to follow these basic tip on your next shopping trip and you will be sure to save money.
