After being shut down for more than an hour, the upper deck westbound lane of the San Francisco Bay Bridge is back open again. Early Thursday morning a man stopped his vehicle and threatened to jump off of the bridge, while also claiming to be armed with both a gun and explosives.
As police arrived, the 16-year old daughter of the suspect exited the SUV they were traveling in and ran to police. She acknowledged that her father was indeed armed. The San Jose Mercury News reported that at one point, the suspect climbed over a side barrier of the bridge, threatening to jump. He called KCBS Radio with his cell phone explaining he had a gun and explosives and was going to kill himself. The reason for his distress was due to marital difficulties.
Police were able to arrest the man without incident after an hour-long standoff. The daughter of the suspect was unharmed. A search of the black SUV by the San Francisco Police bomb squad resulted in no explosive devices.
