With the holidays quickly approaching, we all know that leftovers are a fact of life. Most of us always make more food than is necessary and so people usually use plastic bowls to store their food. However, there are many different ways that you can store your Thanksgiving leftovers without using plastic, which is bad for the environment. Here are five ways to store your Thanksgiving leftovers in an eco-friendly way; use glass storage containers, biodegradable unbleached wax bags, cover with recycled tin foil, use leftover glass jars, and use containers made out of 100% recycled plastic.
Glass bowls are a better option when looking for food storage containers. The reason being is that glass won’t just sit in landfills like plastic does. According to Glassworks Recycling, glass is just made out of silica sand, soda ash and limestone and isn’t toxic. When put in a landfill after being crushed it will return back to sand.
Biodegradable unbleached wax bags are good to use instead of plastic bags because they are 100% compostable, which means that they can be absorbed back into the soil, according to ehow.com. If every one used these it would be a lot better for the environment.
If you don’t want to go out and buy new glass containers and bags then you can just use the recycled type of tin foil. Tin foil is good because it can easily be reused. Besides tin foil to cover your leftovers, you can also put ceramic plates on top of the bowls to cover them. While this may take up more room in your refrigerator it is better for the environment in the long run.
Everyone buys items from the grocery store that comes in a glass container. Using these containers to store your leftovers is not only cheaper then purchasing new containers, but it is eco-friendly as well. My Mother would even use mason jars for drinking glasses.
If you go to specialty stores or look online you can also find 100% recycled plastic containers that are better than the plastic being put in a landfill. These are another way you can store your Thanksgiving leftovers in an eco-friendly way.
So when you are putting away the leftovers after your Thanksgiving dinner, make sure that you think about the environment. There are many ways that are easy to incorporate thinking about the environment into your life.
