If you like going to the beach or the pool you probably already own several beach towels. The towels are great because they’re oversized and often feature beach themes or vibrant colors. There are lots of things you can take to the beach that are made from beach towels. One is a carryall that can hold your towel, book, sunscreen and more. Another is a cute bathing suit coverup that’s perfect for drying off and wearing around the beach. You’ll need to sew a little bit to make the towel poncho but you won’t have to be a real pro. A few simple stitches and you’ll be done!
A long beach towel works well for most women. For younger girls you can choose a bath towel. To begin making the poncho just fold the towel in half. If there is an obvious right side and a wrong side to the towel fold it so that the right sides are together.
At the fold, cut a large half-moon shape to create the neckline. Don’t cut it so large that the towel will fall off the shoulders but make sure it’s large enough for the head to easily slide into it. Now use binding tape to sew around the cut. Start at the shoulder seam area and begin stitching the binding. If you have no binding use wide ribbon. Fold it over the edge of the cut so that half the ribbon is cover the top and half is covering the bottom of the cut edge. After sewing all the way around the neckline, overlap a small portion of the ribbon or binding, then back-tack to secure.
Cut two lengths of narrow ribbon and sew them to one side of the towel top. Do the same to the opposite side. It’s a good idea to try the poncho on to get the proper placement for the ribbons, which should be near or at the waistline. Position the end of the ribbons next to the edges of the towels and do a few stitches, forward then backward, to secure the ties.
If you want, you can cut a pocket or two from the towel piece you cut off to make the neckline. Sew these onto the front of the bathing suit coverup to hold keys, cash and more. The towel coverup is nice to throw on after coming out of the water; it’ll dry you off and cover you up at the same time!
