Captive bear that killed Ohio man is euthanized, Jeannie Nuss, Deseret News, August 21, 2010 John Kandra says the captive bear that killed his 24-year-old son, Brent, is dead. Brent had been tending the exotic animals, which belong to Sam Mazzola, for some weeks. When he opened the bear’s cage for a routine feeding Thursday, the bear attacked and killed him.
Mr. Mazzola said that Kandra’s family could decide the fate of the bear. Several relatives watched as a veterinarian euthanized the bear today.
Brent’s father described him as one who liked fishing, spending much of his childhood in the Northeastern Ohio rivers participating in that sport.
We may never know what caused the bear to suddenly attack Brent Kandra. Putting the bear down may have been a difficult decision for Kandra’s family, but possibly could have saved another life somewhere up the road.
