Looking at your grandmother, you might not assume that she has any current information on beauty. She might still think electric blue eye shadow is the only way to go or believes that frosted lipstick and frosted eye shadow should be worn together. However, chances are, she does have some beauty tips worth listening to. Some you might know and already follow, some you should know and start following today.
Grandma tip #1
Never wear your makeup to bed. There are real reasons for this. It isn’t just an old wives tale or a simple recommendation. This is a must! You need to take your makeup off every night because of the horrible things it can do to your skin. Makeup can trap oil. This then causes pores to clog and the eventual pimple to appear. Leaving makeup on overnight can also cause rashes to appear as a result of skin irritation. Your face, like the rest of your body’s skin, needs to be able to breathe. Washing your face at the end of the night also does your skin some good because you are assisting in cell turnover rate which will leave you with healthier skin in the long run. If you like to take the lazy woman’s out (which I do almost nightly) use a makeup remover wipe. Many companies make them and you can usually find them on the cheap. Simply put a container of them right next to your bed so the next time your too tired to walk to the sink, just roll over, pull one out, and wipe the grime away.
Grandma tip #2
Moisturize. Chances are your grandmother has never slept a night without some sort of moisturizer on her face. I believe this single act of my grandmother has kept the Vaseline Company in business as Vaseline is her moisturizer of choice. I also believe this act is the number one reason my 76 year old grandmother is 80% free of wrinkles. Now you don’t have to use Vaseline but use something. Keeping your skin moisturized will help prevent wrinkles from forming and will help keep your skin from sinking in as a result of skin dehydration. Be sure to moisturize twice a day too! Make sure your morning time moisturizer has an SPF. This will also help you fight the wrinkle war.
Grandma tip #3
When you do wear makeup, watch your foundation lines. Ok. This is one tip that can be learned (in some cases and in no way all of them) by looking. For some reason this is the number one makeup issue I see on women of all ages but have noticed a little more often on older women. When you put your foundation on, be sure to blend it into your neck. Ladies should not walk around all day looking like they are wearing masks; unless of course, they are wearing masks.
So, next time you want to roll your eyes at the lessons your grandmother teaches you…just listen. They have lived a lot longer than we have and if you look at her skin and see that it has aged well, listen to her advice extra hard. She didn’t make it that far in life with great skin not knowing what she was doing.
