Your bedroom is the place you go to relax, to catch up on your rest and prepare for a new day; because of this, your bedroom should be a relaxing color, one that induces calm. There are so many paint colors that will promote the feeling of calmness that it may be difficult to decide on a color.
A promoter of change through color, I have experimented with many colors and find that the softer colors work best in a bedroom environment. For a sophisticated look, read on and I will share my latest bedroom makeover.
We begin with a light color Hackberry wood flooring. The wood flooring is very light, with dark colors, both browns and grays running through the wood. The room is furnished in dark, Missionary style bedroom furniture. The windows and trim are wood and the doors, bathroom, entry and closet are all six panel doors.
Removing all furnishing from the room, we prepped the walls and painted all trim and doors with Rustoleum White Satin oil based paint. I chose this paint because of the durability, as baseboards and doors tend to get a lot of abuse. I used a bright white for contrast. Letting the trim dry for at least 24 hours, I taped it off with blue painters tape so that I did not overlap the paint.
My wall color choice was Metropolis by Valspar. The Valspar color number is 4005-1C and is part of the Valspar Ultra Premium Color line. It retailed for around $24 a gallon and is available at Lowe’s. It is not one of the more expensive paints and that is fine for me because I tend to change colors frequently. Valspar Ultra premium is very durable paint and holds the crispness of the color a very long time.
Metropolis by Valspar Ultra Premium Color is a gray shade with strong blue undertones and is considered a cool color. The blue undertones warm the color so that it does not feel stark, allowing it to retain the cool, sophisticated feel of the gray. Gray is the predominate color therefore it does not evoke a lot of emotion, providing a very restful environment.
Gray is a neutral color and can be made gender specific with the addition of color through decoration. Shades of pink, light blue and lavender go very well with the color Metropolis by Valspar Ultra premium Color for a feminine feel. Darker shades of blues and greens will go very well for a masculine feel.
I did discover that the gray really pulled the red tones out in the bedroom furniture, providing a lot of warm which is very nice against the color gray and white.
I dressed it all up with a 7×8 shag carpet and a gorgeous electric fireplace. The only problem I have come up with is that I may never leave the bedroom now!
