Being the single dad of my three daughters is one of the most awesome and exciting privileges I have had in my lifetime. My daughters were joys from the days they were born. I was right there as they entered the world, first to hold them and first to whisper in their ear.
As little girls, their sun rose and set in their dad, me. Our every day was a new adventure for what we might do together next.
I became a single dad when my girls, Tiffany, Micha, and Bernadette were very young. Tiffany was six. Micha was five. Bernadette was three. To me, they were the most beautiful people alive.
Wherever I was, my daughters were with me. To provide for their child care while working or going to school, I managed a child care center during the evening to earn a salary plus get the child care we would need a no cost. My girls were with me all the time I managed the center.
When I had public speaking engagements on the weekends for companies, I would only accept if the companies provided for my children as a condition of having me work for them. Resorts and hotels I stayed in had programs for children that would engage them while I served. We really learned to like room service.
Because I was raising girls, women did not always know the best way to relate to me. Often women stepped to me with the idea that I needed a woman in my life to take care of my girls.
I would then ask what they were volunteering for because if my girls didn’t like them, the conversation was over before it started. I said more times than I could count to women who pushed the idea I needed a woman, “I can cook, clean, and comb hair. What do you do?”
My girls were all honor students in school. They were in scouts. I was the dad present. They played in soft ball leagues. They were very social little misses making friends easy. These little princesses lit up my life. I was thankful to be their father.
When we ended our day every day, we had a shared prayer time at their bedside. I would ask who loves Tiffany and we would all yell, “I do.” Who loves Micha and we would all yell, “I do.” Who loves Bernadette and we would all yell, “I do.”
Tiffany, Micha, and Bernadette have always been a joy. Being their dad was and is awesome.
