Grants (NM) answered some key questions as they opened their season at home, the Port of the Pirates, with a impressive (42-7) win over hapless Capital, (Santa Fe, NM). It seemed like Junior QB Ryan Ramirez gained more confidence throughout the game, defense held the opposing offense to just one score and Junior DB Robert Quintana had four picks, and even the special teams made significant contributions to the whole team effort.
This week the Grants (NM) Pirates face, possibly, their toughest pre-district foe at Bloomfield (NM). A win on the road Friday could ignite a winning streak that would carry well into district play.
The Belen (NM) Eagles picked up a lopsided victory (42-0) over pre-season hopeful Deming (NM). Belen looks to make it back to the NM 4A championship game and their initial efforts made a statement that they have a great chance to do just that.
Aztec (NM) answered all questions and welcomed Los Lunas (NM) to the 4A level with a 49-0 arial assault that should keep more than a few defensive coordinators up late trying to come up with a plan to stop QB Bryscon King who racked up over 300 yards passing and another 63 yards rushing. His favorite target, WR Tylin Hirsch, had four touchdowns to start the season.
Opening day in New Mexico set the stage for an entertaining season. This week more rivals face off and hope to continue their dominant start to a young season. The boys of fall are back, get out and support your favorite team Friday night.
