The most haunted Halloween Costume Party is being held within 1.5 hours of Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, RTP and Greensboro, NC. Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center is holding this year’s mysteriously spooky Halloween party on Saturday, October 30, 2010. Let’s see if we can work your juices up for the best haunted location in Virginia and convenient to North Carolina residents:
Halloween banishes summer to a coffin and creeps past fall into the undead silence of night. October devalues the light, and the colors of life change to the crisp, bloodthirsty colors of autumn demise. On the winds of death, the leaves begin to drop and rumors spread across the rustling shadows of the Dan River. Liquid memory ripples the river on some full moons and a restless finger of questionable intent moves the water. The remembrance becomes a mist, a mirror of the past, a specter of the future or just a moment when you are enraptured by the mysterious now.
Along the haunted fringes of the stealthy Dan River stands a majestic mansion called Berry Hill Plantation. Berry Hill was originally granted to William Byrd II by the Crown in 1728. Byrd II helped establish the North Carolina-Virginia dividing line. Berry Hill then passed to Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the fourth Governor of Virginia. Edward Carrington, a nephew of Colonel Edward Carrington of the Race to the Dan would become the new owner. The next owner of Berry Hill would be James Coles Bruce who would build the present standing Greek revival mansion. The pre-civil war manor would remain in the Bruce family possession for approximately 100 years. Fred M. Watkins owned the property from 1950 to 1988 according to Berry Hill historian, Leland Luck. Fred refused to stay on the plantation and left Old Richard there as a caretaker for almost 20 years. While Richard Cecil Rogers lived there, he wrote a poem about his ghostly encounters called “The Ghost of Berry Hill”.
Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center is reportedly haunted. In October, 2010, a paranormal investigation was held at Berry Hill by NCHAGS, G.H.O.S.T.S. of Raleigh, and The Heritage Hunters Society to try to obtain evidence of paranormal activity.
