Halloween is creeping around the corner and will be here in no time. It is a special time because you can do so many different things with people of all ages. Scary movies are often a tradition to watch on Halloween night. Each decade that has passed has given us some pretty scary picks. A few months ago, I wrote about the 5 best horror movies for the 2000’s. Yeah, those were good movies but what about the earlier ones that were made in the 1980’s? Those were some great movies! These are my picks for the best scary movies of the 1980’s.
This is one of the craziest movies ever! This movie was made in 1980 and directed by Stanley Kubrick. Jack Nicholson stars in the movie as the writer who becomes influenced by evil in the hotel the family moved into. Watching this movie today still makes me jump! This is wear the famous “Red Rum” comes from. It is of course, murder spelled backwards. If you have not seen this one, you absolutely have to rent it!
It is a wonder anyone can stand dolls after this movie! “Child’s Play” was made in 1988 and directed by Tom Holland. The movie is centered around “Chucky,” which is a doll that was given to Andy for his birthday. Andy then begins to notice strange things the doll does. The whole aspect of the doll coming to life and being evil, was enough to scare me! If you haven’t seen this movie, it is definitely a must see for some added Halloween horror!
Nightmare On Elm Street
This is definitely one of my all time favorite “give me nightmares” movie! The dead child killer Fred Krueger was unleashed into theaters in 1984 and was directed and created by Wes Craven. Robert Englund plays the role of Fred. Fred was burned alive by furious parents down in the boiler room where he used to hideout. Now Fred is back and is haunting Nancy’s dreams. Will she be able to stay alive? This movie will scare the children for sure, so it is probably best to avoid letting little eyes view this slasher flick. If you haven’t seen this movie, you probably live in another universe and should rent it!
This is one of the more creepy movies, without the blood and gore. It is a psychological thriller! “Poltergeist” was released in 1982 and was directed by Tobe Hooper. The plot centers around Carol Anne. She is communicating with seemingly harmless spirits via the static television station. She gets kidnapped by these spirits that are lead by a demon force. Will the family be able to save Carol Anne? This is one that you should rent, not only for Halloween but simply for the great thrill it will give you.
