It’s hard to find a good Italian Restaurant outside of New York City that serves authentic Italian cuisine, at prices that fit a family budget. Here’s a list of local restaurants that have the best Italian food for the money, and an atmosphere that families will enjoy.
On the top of my list is Momma Lombardi’s Restaurant, located at 400 Furrows Rd, Holbrook, NY. Their # is: 631-737-0774. There is a fine dining area, perfect for taking a loved one on a dinner date, and separated by a tiny hall is the main pizza and pickup area, with lots of simple luncheonette-type seating for families. Foremost in Neapolitan cuisine, Momma Lombardi’s imports it’s own San Marzano tomatoes from their own farm in Italy. They use the freshest ingredients to create one-of-a-kind masterpieces that are pleasing to the palate and easy on the wallet, if you choose. When dining in the restaurant, the waiters are top-notch. They are there to please you in every culinary way possible. Always choose the Pasta e fagioli, it’s a winner. Mussels Marinara or Fra Diavolo are a great choice, and the Veal Ala Momma Lombardi, teaming with prosciutto, mushroom, mozzarella and artichokes in to die for. Other hearty meals are available to make your mouth water. Thye also have a large wine list! In the pizza area, there is every kind of pizza that you could want, plus – you can have them make you special pizzas to order. It’s best to arrive early, as this kitchen becomes extremely busy, especially on weekends. Pizza should be ordered well in advance: 3 hours would suffice. Pick up in the restaurant, or have it delivered. If ordering to a work lunch, order early in the morning rather than later. Desserts are a specialty at Momma’s too – everything is made fresh. All in all, you’ll never have to worry about the quality of your food, or the service, if you plan ahead and arrive early. Momma’s is very popular with Italian families for a reason! They’ve recently opened a restaurant on the bay in Patchogue. If you’re local, you might want to check it out, too. Here’s their website: http://www.mammalombardis.com/MammaLombardis/index.cfm
Next up is DiNapoli’s Pizza Restaurant, located where Junior’s Pizza used to be, at 520 Mastic Road, Mastic Beach, NY. It might not seem like a first class joint from the outside, but once you’ve met the owners, you’ll know this is a great place to go. They’ve got a typical pizza-restaurant menu, but the pies are so fresh that you’ll wonder why you would order from anywhere else. I was witness one night to their taking an order requesting bacon on their pizza (not a typical topping). The owner went out and got the bacon to complete the order. No questions asked. Their signature sauce reminds me of Brooklyn, where one could smell the fresh pizza sauce being made every day at the little pizza shops along Kings Highway. Food is served up quickly for those who wish to dine in, and deliveries appear within 45 minutes as a rule. If ordering for a larger gathering, it’s best to order in advance by at least a few hours. Prices are very suitable for a family or a large gathering, as well. Ices and Ice Cream are also on the menu, and they have a selection of both so large that it’ll blow your mind.
Third, but not last in flavor, is John’s Restaurant & Pizzeria 351 Neighborhood Rd, Mastic Beach, NY 11951-3415 631-281-9828. Won Best Pizza On Long Island Award for their signature pizza. It’s located in a pretty little villa-style house, right in town. Long overlooked, this spot is perfect for lunch on-the-go. Service is quick, and they’re there to please you. Do order a pizza. You’ll be in heaven. One small problem, they’ve only got four tables indoors. If you don’t mind sitting outside, they have a deck. Prices here are phenomenally affordable.
