Penang, a state in Malaysia, is a popular destination for six million tourists every year as it has beautiful beaches, interesting temples, a mix of Malay, Indian and Chinese culture and was recently voted home to the best street food in Asia (it’s cheap too!). A great way to see Penang is to take one of the area’s many tours. With half-day and full-day tours to choose from, as well as temple tours, island tours, city tours and more, it can be hard to choose which tour to take. A good way to start is with these three best Penang tours – then go on from there.
Penang Grand Tour – The best way to start a vacation in Penang is by taking a Penang Island Grand Tour, which is also one of Penang’s top three tours. It’s a full-day tour, it includes lunch and you really do see a lot of Penang Island in seven hours.
On the Penang Grand Tour, you begin by being driven around the island with stops at traditional Malay villages, the Snake Temple, see Asia’s longest bridge and visit a Batik Factory, where you’ll see how batik is made as well as have an opportunity to buy this beautiful Malay handicraft.
Lunch is at a traditional Malay restaurant, where you’ll try local food and, as Penang is famous for its food, you’re in for a treat. In the afternoon, you’ll stop at Penang Hill, Malaysia’s first hill station, with its phenomenal views. You also get a fun ride on a funicular train then, on the way home, drive through Colonial Georgetown to see its colonial architecture. You’ll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel and don’t forget to take some great photos.
Butterfly Farm and Botanical Garden – Malaysia is famous for its Butterfly Farm and Botanical Garden, which are two of the most visited places in the region. The Butterfly Farm is the world’s largest butterfly farm and is located at the foothill of Teluk Bahang, a once busy fishing village. At the Butterfly Farm, you’ll not only see thousands of varieties of butterfly but also tarantulas, spiders, water dragons, scorpions and lots more creepy crawlies.
The tour continues at the Botanical Gardens, just a few miles from the Butterfly Farm. This beautiful garden area is massive and is full of exotic plants and flowers, with waterfalls and even monkeys. The tour takes about three and a half hours after which you’ll be dropped back at your hotel in time for lunch.
Penang Night Tour and Hawker’s Center – The last of the top three Penang tours is the Penang Night Tour and Hawker’s Center. Penang is beautiful in the evening, with its heavy night air smelling of orchids and it’s lovely lights, so a drive through Georgetown is perfect. Stop off at the world-famous Gurney Drive, the hawker food center, where you can eat to your heart’s content and, seeing as Penang was named as having the best street food in Asia, you’re sure to be satisfied.
After dinner, see Penang’s tallest building, the KOMTAR Tower, and finally have fun shopping at one of the local night markets. The tour takes four hours and includes hotel drop off and pick up.
