Livingreen founder Ellen Strickland opened her first store in Santa Barbara in1999. Selling a variety of sustainable home furnishings and gifts as well as cleaning products, the store was a hit with environmentally conscious homeowners and builders. New locations soon opened in Culver City and Montecito (near Santa Barbara). Livingreen sells non-toxic KisClean glass and multi-purpose cleaners, Meyers’ biodegradable, plant-based soaps, toilet bowl cleaner and surface wipes. The brick-and-mortar stores are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p. m. Consumers can also purchase cleaners through the Livingreen website.

A one-stop shop for green products, consulting services and sustainability workshops, West L.A.’s All Shades of Green boasts an inventory that includes handmade, eco-friendly jewelry and soy wax crayon “rocks” , the earth-positive version of Crayola Crayons. Waterless car wash and bike wash contain carnauba wax that won’t harm vehicle paint or the water supply. They also sell Laundry Soap “Nuts” made from the dried fruit of the Chinese soapberry tree.

Several health food stores and environmentally-conscious supermarket chains in L.A. county sell a selection non-toxic cleaning products. At Trader Joe’s (stores in Hollywood, Fairfax District, West L.A., Silver Lake and throughout the Valley and beach communities), you can buy well-known natural brands like Dr. Bronner’s organic castile soap and Seventh Generation laundry detergents and spray cleaners. Whole Foods stores in L.A. County carry products from Begley’s Best, the company founded by actor and environmental activist Ed Begley, Jr. The product line features all-purpose spray cleaner made from olive seeds, fermented sugar cane and other natural ingredients.
