Who is Bethany Storro? She is a 28-year-old woman from Washington state who had people on edge around the country after telling authorities that a black woman randomly threw acid in her face outside a Starbucks on August 30, 2010. It turns out that it was just an elaborate story created by a woman with psychological problems. Her face was indeed scarred, but the attack was a hoax. Storro’s injuries were self-inflicted, and she could be charged with filing a false report.
The police released a composite sketch of the attacker, described by Storro, but when no witnesses turned up to help with the investigation, the validity of her claim became questionable. Starbucks is a fairly busy place, and it’s unlikely that people would simply continue to sip their lattes and ignore such a blatant attack, had it occurred.
Several more holes began to appear in the “victim’s” story. So police received a search warrant to gain access to Storro’s home. After removing several unidentified items, Storro was interviewed again, and that’s when the truth came out. No one is sure why she did this, least of all her parents. They stood by Storro throughout the whole debacle, and said she was suffering from emotional and psychological distress. They apologized for their daughter’s actions and are in the process of returning money that some caring individuals had donated to Storro.
