The circus is coming to town! The 33rd season of The Big Apple Circus is starting on Oct. 21, so get ready. The show will be in town through the beginning of January, so it’s a great holiday present for families and friends alike. Every child should see the circus at least once, and if you haven’t, now’s the time to remedy that.
There will be gravity-defying stunts, chill-inducing feats of daring and plenty of laughs to be found at this New York circus. The performers hail from all over the world and include, both two-legged and four-legged stars. One of the acts that caught my attention first was the dancing horses. The show’s website boasts of an “equine chorus line” composed of a dozen miniature horses; watching horses dance in sync is not something you see every day.
Another performance to watch out for is motorcycle troupe from China, rivaled in daring only by the pole climbers that will also take a turn on stage. Their in-house band will provide live music and a handful of clowns will take turns teasing, flirting and performing for the audience. Grandma – not yours, but theirs – will be part of that group, so make sure to show some respect. It’s more than she’ll likely do.
Elephants and lions were not mentioned on their website, leading me to hope that they are not part of the show and therefore the performances can be enjoyed guilt-free. From acrobats to a charismatic ringleader, though, the circus will have everything else. Tickets range from the very affordable $15 to the slightly pricier $92, but will not break the bank and will definitely insure a fun, high-energy evening.
