Birmingham’s success is drawing national attention. After an 20+ year run, Birmingham’s city manager has been recruited to do the same for Iowa City.
Tom Markus has been Birmingham’s city manager since 1989, and has overseen the city’s downtown development into what it is today. He helped focus the city on what it wanted out of its downtown business environment, and then helped guide it to its goals.
Markus was instrumental in getting a Michigan law altered to include what is now known as a prinicipal shopping district. He also was the one who focused on a particular look and feel for downtown development, minus big box stores and major retailers, that would thrive and be unique enough to stand on its own.
