When asked by border authorities to declare the currency that he was carrying with him, a Birmingham man lied. As a result, approximately $20,000 of his winnings from a Windsor casino were seized. The man, who was crossing at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, split up his winnings with his passenger in an attempt to avoid the $10,000 currency reporting requirement. One man reported a total of $9,400; the other reported a total of $9,500. Upon further questioning, one man admitted that the cash was actually all his friend’s. The total amount that was seized was $19,910. The man will have the opportunity to appeal the seizure via Customs and Border Protection.
