The principal of Birmingham Covington School wants you to know that he welcomes your child’s cellphone in his classrooms. Principal Hartley has gone on the record as saying that he sees cellphone use in the classroom as a burgeoning educational tool, not a nuisance.
His reasoning is relatively simple-cellphones are increasingly common, and increasingly being used for far more than just phone calls. He argued that because a rising percentage of children and adults are using cellphones to access email and the internet, that that power can be used to harness a child’s attention span. The ability of cellphones to be more like mini-computers than just phones could potentially allow a child to access a word document or a webpage for expanded learning opportunities.
