A recent survey sent out to Birmingham’s downtown businesses came back with a clear message–send the city’s two annual art fairs back to the park. The business owners say that holding the fairs in downtown like they were this year hurts their businesses for the duration of the fairs.
This is the first year the fairs were held in downtown. Shain Park, their usual home, had some construction going on around it that made holding the fairs there impossible. The fairs each bring in around 100,000 people each year.
The fairs’ organizers liked having them in downtown better and would like to make that a permanent location. The downtown businesses had asked if it was possible to turn the artists’ tents in the opposite direction, but police and fire officials say that would make emergency vehicle access impossible. The city council will ultimately have to decide on the matter. The city’s next art fair will be in May of next year.
