BJ Penn is a mixed martial arts fighter who fights in the UFC. His nickname is “The Prodigy”. BJ Penn fights naturally in the lightweight division in the UFC. He is currently ranked 5th in the lightweight MMA rankings. He was ranked as the top lightweight fighter in the world before his two losses to Frankie Edgar where he lost his UFC Lightweight Championship. BJ Penn at the age of 31 is now at the crossroads of his career. He lost his championship and age may be catching up with him.
BJ Penn won the UFC Welterweight Championship against Matt Hughes at UFC 46 in 2004. He then lost the UFC Welterweight Championship to Matt Hughes at UFC 63 in 2006. Before that fight, BJ Penn also lost to GSP by split decision. He replaced the injured GSP in the fight against Matt Hughes. BJ Penn decided it was time for him to go back to his natural lightweight class in the UFC. He won the UFC Lightweight belt against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 in 2008. BJ Penn held on to the UFC Lightweight belt until he met up with Frankie Edgar who took the belt away from him at UFC 112 and kept the belt by defeating BJ Penn again at UFC 118. BJ “The Prodigy” Penn must now go back to his roots and fight Matt Hughes once again. The winner of the fight will go on in their MMA career; the loser will become Dana White’s new UFC water boy. In other words, the loser will have one step out of the UFC and will be on their way into retirement.
BJ Penn was called “The Prodigy” because of his natural fighting ability. BJ was always a great fighter even when he did not train enough for a fight. The problem was quite often BJ Penn did not train enough for a fight. Instead, he relied on his natural abilities. At 31 years of age, BJ Penn can no longer depend on his natural ability. He is slowing down because of his age and the many wars that are behind him. BJ Penn is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and he is a great boxer. His right hand can knock out an opponent by itself. However, BJ is not as fast as he used to be and the younger stronger fighters can move away from that heavy punch.
BJ Penn has a choice; he can train (harder than he ever has before) or continue on his downward spiral in the MMA lightweight division. BJ Penn can no longer depend on his natural abilities. He is no longer “The Prodigy”. BJ Penn has to get himself into the gym and develop more of his fighting game. He has to better himself as a MMA fighter or his championship career will be over. This next fight against Matt Hughes at UFC 123 is the most important UFC fight for BJ Penn to date. He must win or there will be talk all over the MMA world about BJ Penn and retirement from the UFC. This champion was dethroned and he must work hard to get his belt back.
