“Bones” Season 6 Episode 4 “The Body and the Bounty” starts with a couple of scruffy “Freegans” deciding to have a nice romantic dinner inside a dumpster overflowing with a lot of free rotting food.
If they had not also found a rotting skull of a human being, the sex afterward would have been something unique as well. Spoilers follow.
Brennan is accosted by one Professor Bunsen Jude, who calls himself “The Science Dude” for purposes of his children’s TV show. Could Brennan be on his next episode, which would be filmed on the Jeffersonian?
No, sorry, no time for people who make science seem silly.
What if the Science Dude could be your intern and impress the hell out of Brennan?
Sounds intriguing, says Brennan. Knock yourself out.
Hodgins is especially thrilled to be working with the Science Dude as he and his college buddies used to have a drinking game in which they would imbibe every time the Science Dude would say, “Aaamaazzing!” It turns out, though, that the Science Dude is pretty good at Hodgins’ Mythbusters-style experiments designed to find out who killed the corpse of the week.
Oh yes, besides a skull, there were two hands in the dumpster. A little bit of detective work uncovers the rest of the guy buried in a national park. He is Ray Raminsky, aka Wolf the Bounty Hunter (I am not making this up.)
The interesting thing about the mode of death is that a piece of Wolf’s rib was broken off and plunged into his heart, killing him instantly. This occurred while he was in hot pursuit of Charles Braverman, wanted for murder. The mysterious part of the exercise is that no bullet or other projectile was found.
The first part of the answer was discovered when it was ascertained that Wolf had gotten into a bar fight and had gotten his rib cracked. Tough fellow that he was, he didn’t get it fixed right away.
After numerous attempts to replicate the fatal injury, the Science Dude figured out that a potato gun would have done the trick. But, seriously, death by potato gun?
It seems that Wolf had a rival bounty hunter, a rather lovely lass who a couple of times in the episode gets Booth annoyed at her for trying to catch Braverman first to pick up the bounty. It seems that she was so intent on the bounty that when she came upon Wolf also trying to collect, she shot him with her bean bag gun with the intent to incapacitate him. However, this broke off the piece of the rib and killed him. Instead of reporting the accident, she tried to conceal it. If it were not for those meddlesome dumpster divers, she would have gotten away with it.
And so Brennan agrees to appear on the Science Dude show. Oddly she does not appear as herself, calmly trying to explain forensic anthropology in terms 10-year-olds can understand. She wears a leotard with a skeleton on it, along with a tutu. The things people must do to excite young minds.
