Sitting on the sofa is so very relaxing. You have your TV in front of you and your remote right beside you. You have your bowl of popcorn and a nice, refreshing drink on the coffee table. Oops, you have no coffee table? No end table, either? That’s totally inconvenient especially if there’s carpeting on the floor. That drink will never make it! Don’t reduce yourself to balancing dishes and drinks because you don’t have any tables yet. Make some in a hurry and let the comfort begin!
You’ll probably have some new tables pretty soon, but in the meanwhile, you’ll need something to tide you over. A cardboard lid is perfect for making a workable coffee table even though it won’t be one that can withstand the same treatment as a real table. The perfect lid for making a coffee table or an end table is one that is made from thick cardboard and one that is at least several inches deep.
Use cardboard tubes, like those from wrapping paper, to make the legs for the table. You’ll need four tubes that are the same in diameter and in height. The lid as well as the tubes can be covered in decorative paper or cloth to give the table a more appealing look but that step isn’t absolutely necessary. You can use the box lid as it is or cover it with a cloth later.
It isn’t hard to assemble the table. Simply use hot glue – or other adhesive – to attach a tube to each corner of the lid. Set the lid so that the flat side is on the table, attach the legs, then stand it up. Or, turn the lid in the opposite direction to make a table with enclosed sides.
Although the table can stand as soon as the legs are attached the ends of the cardboard tubes will be sturdier if you glue pieces of cardboard to them. The cardboard squares need only be slightly larger than the ends of the tubes.
Even though a cardboard table can’t hold a lot of weight it can hold a small lamp, a drink or two, several dishes and other lightweight items. Make one for each end of the couch and one to use as a coffee table until you get your real furniture. Make one to set on each side of the bed, too!
