So, you learned to braid hair years ago and maybe you still do braid from time to time. Braiding is a great way to keep hair nice and neat but it’s also handy for other projects. If you can braid you can create a huge assortment of unique wall hangings. Braid roping, cord, twine or even yarn to make the background for any number of hanging designs.
Use a metal ring as the hanger for the braid. You’ll find them in assorted sizes as nearly any craft store. In fact, even a key ring can be used for this craft. Decide how long you want the wall hanging to be and cut three lengths of cord, roping or other material to twice that length. Keep in mind that, after it’s braided, it will be much shorter than the original pieces. It’s better to cut the roping pieces longer than needed, and after the braid reaches the length you want, cut off the excess.
To start, take the three ends of the cord and place them through the ring. Center the ring in the middle of the rope and gather all the ends together. Now use two cord pieces for each part of the braid. So, position the rope so that you have three sets of two. Go ahead and start braiding, starting the braid up close to the ring. As you finish the braid, tie it off with a piece of twine, then cut off the excess.
This simple braid can become the background for any number of things you want to glue to it. One arrangement is made when you simply glue on button magnets. Now you can display several of your favorite refrigerator magnets or other metal objects. Or, add magnetic sheeting pieces to the back of lightweight picture frames and stick them to the magnets.
Craft stores are full of things that can be glued onto the braid to create a particular theme. Flat, wooden shapes, holiday novelties, shells, small ceramic pieces, plastic fruits and vegetables or even foam shapes can be used to decorate the braid. Use holiday colors for the rope to make a Christmas or Easter theme. Braid red, white and blue cord to make a Fourth of July design. Or, use brown roping to create a country theme. Make these for the kitchen, the bathroom, a bedroom or another area of the home. It’s a quick way to create a nice décor piece for most any occasion or to use year-round.
