The Brett Favre investigation has been stalled so far. No Brett Favre investigation can proceed without accounts from the two main subjects, but one of them will have to come forward today. Yet, although the Vikings quarterback will be interviewed today, the woman he allegedly harassed has not cooperated yet. Since Jenn Sterger was reluctant to have Deadspin leak her claims in the first place, she remains reluctant to share her side. Nevertheless, the investigation of the Minnesota quarterback will get the side of the accused this afternoon.
Almost two weeks after Deadspin posted Favre’s alleged lewd photos and messages, the quarterback will be questioned by the league today. NFL security chief Milt Ahlerich will direct the interview, as they are set to ask what really happened between Favre and Jenn Sterger.
Yet the investigation may not be able to keep going without Sterger’s testimony. Thus far, she has not shared anything with them, and may stay quiet the whole way through. Without her account, then, it is unlikely that the NFL can do anything about this.
However, it is not surprising that Sterger hasn’t come forward herself. Deadspin first posted these allegations two months ago, before Sterger could give her consent. She revealed these details off the record, and it was a third party that sent the racy pictures and messages to Deadspin.
Although Sterger has stayed silent, the league is still going forward. They sped up the inquiry to prove that they weren’t giving him special treatment, and to ensure that they didn’t have another Ben Roethlisberger-esq scandal on their hands. Even if Sterger doesn’t break her silence, Favre can still hurt himself if he gives the wrong answers today.
In spite of all this, the worst of it may be starting to die down. This mess was all that fans could talk about last week, especially with the Vikings and Favre struggling so much on the field. However, the Vikings won the “Panic Bowl” against the Cowboys, and the controversy over devastating hits is now the big story this week.
Over time, the Brett Favre investigation may head for a quiet end, especially since, without Sterger, they may not be able to give out much punishment. There was talk that Roger Goodell could end Favre’s consecutive start streak by suspending him, yet it might not get that extreme now.
Favre could still get fined, however, and the impact of this scandal has still derailed his so-called final season. Today’s interview stands to be uncomfortable, but his hope – and the Vikings’ hope – is that the scandal and investigation gets easier from here on in.
