The Brett Favre scandal certainly has legs now. DeadSpin broke the Brett Favre scandal two months ago, but nothing really came out of it, since few believed the gossip site. Now that DeadSpin has racy audio messages and pictures, the NFL is more open to believing it now. In fact, it now may be an even bigger distraction for tonight’s Monday night showdown than Randy Moss. But thanks to this scandal, Brett Favre might actually have to take a break afterward, for the first time in decades.
DeadSpin started a firestorm by posting audio messages, and pictures of a human penis, a few days ago. Since they were allegedly sent by Favre to former Jets reporter Jenn Sterger, the league has been left in a quandary. If this is true, it would mean that one of its biggest icons has violated Roger Goodell’s code of conduct.
Therefore, the scandal has become a major matter for the NFL, as they are going above and beyond to not show favoritism. According to ESPN, they are even looking into new reports that two massage therapists also got racy text messages from Favre. No stone is being left unturned, which could leave the league in a historic position.
If the scandal has merit, then Goodell will have to take action against Favre. In fact, the worst-case scenario would involve a suspension, which would end Favre’s historic streak of starts. He has started every game for years, battling back injuries and slumps, but this could end it at the worst time.
The Vikings are in desperate need of their quarterback, even though his season is off to an ugly start. If the scandal gets him suspended, it could be a disaster for the team, since they have a brutal schedule this month. At 1-2, the Vikings could sink into a huge hole very quickly, and even the return of Randy Moss won’t help if Favre misses time.
When Favre returned for one more season yet again, this isn’t the Cinderella finale that he and Minnesota counted on. Getting suspended for racy texts and photos could overshadow anything he does on the field, and would be an uglier final act of his career than his endless indecisions. Since Goodell suspended Ben Roethlisberger for being suspected of rape, he can’t be soft on Favre if his charges have merit.
The Brett Favre scandal has provided yet another subplot to the Vikings-Jets showdown, if possible. His return to New York, and the return of Moss, has already made this the most hyped game of the season. But the hype likely hasn’t helped the Vikings, though the ultimate proof will come tonight.
