Brookfield Zoo is one of Chicagoland’s best attractions for year-round fun. It is in the town of Brookfield and is accessible by car or train. Whether you live directly in the Chicago suburbs or a little farther out (like Yorkville), this trip to the zoo will be well worth your while.
When you think of going to the zoo, you might think of summer and spring trips. Well, of course the zoo is ideal for those seasons, but what about winter? Brookfield Zoo offers an amazing lights festival yearly throughout the weekends in December. This is a perfect activity for the family, to take a date to, or to just enjoy the lights on your own.
Parking for the zoo is $9 for regular-sized vehicles and $12 for buses. Admission is $13.50 for adults and $9.50 for seniors over 65 and children ages 3-11. Children who are 2 and under get in for free. You can also buy package deals with the extras the zoo offers like the dolphin show and tram.
Brookfield has been holding this light festival for 29 years and counting! This would be the perfect start to a new yearly family outing or just something fun to do in the midst of winter nothingness. The festival is not only limited to lights though. You can still see the animals in their exhibits, eat at the fun restaurants, see the dolphin show and shop in the many of the zoo’s gift stores.
Holiday Magic will also feature Santa Claus through Dec. 19. This would be ideal for the younger kids that still look forward to telling Santa all their wants for Christmas. Throughout the zoo you will see professional carvers working on ice sculptures. During some of the weekend days, the zoo offers free live entertainment and you can even go caroling and sing to the animals!
This is something that can be done every year. It is worth it to take the kids during the winter season for sure. What better way to celebrate Christmas than a trip to the zoo? All the lights and displays will give you the feeling of being in a “winter wonderland.” With all the activities the zoo has to offer, you might even want to make another trip back to the Holiday Magic festival to be able to fully enjoy it! This is definitely something fun that winter has to offer!
