It is often said that the more someone gives, the more they get back. The Brooklyn Community Foundation is taking that principle and running with it. They have created an award to honor the most inspiring and selfless people in the local Brooklyn community. The first annual Brooklyn Do Gooder Awards are taking place on November 3rd and all of Brooklyn is invited to vote on which five Brooklynites will win.
As befits an award of this nature, rather than giving cash to the winners themselves $5,000 will be donated to the charity of each winner’s choice. Winners will also be given an award they can display as well as being wined and dined at the Do Gooders Award ceremony, which is taking place at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Voting is open until October 15th and up to five votes a day can be cast to select the top twenty candidates, though the final narrowing of that selection to five winners will be made by a panel of judges.
Residents can search for nominees in their neighborhood or read through biographies to pick their favorites. There are close to 250 nominees and each of their stories are different. Those who wish to leave a comment can do so using their Facebook account, allowing proud friends and family to leave their comments and allowing New Yorkers who are proud of their neighbors to trumpet it for all the world to hear.
