It’s been a whirlwind of a season on ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters” (although I suppose that’s what happens when the producers fast forward a year), but on this week’s episode we got to see some real movement.
First up, there may be hope for Justin (Dave Annable ) to finally get over his emotionally draining relationship with Rebecca (the now departed Emily Van Camp). Remember, this hasn’t been any easy ride from the get-go for these two, because at one point they thought they were biological siblings.
But Becks has gone off to New York to find herself, leaving Justin to tote her mom to her appointments, and now there’s a hot nurse (played by Annable’s real life wife, Odette Yustman) at the hospital. The usually serious Justin, posing as Holly’s “family friend”, is gettin’ Nurse Annie all giggly. But when he does later admit that Holly is actually his mother in law, Annie bolts. She resurfaces later and they go for a cozy cup of coffee, while joking about that awful “tan line” on Justin’s finger (darn wedding ring!).
This is a busy episode for Justin. In another scene, Justin suspects that David ( Ken Olin) is walking around high as a kite. Dave gets defensive but later explains that he’s under a lot of stress since Holly’s accident.
The bored Kitty and Sarah Sarah (Calista Flockhart , Rachel Griffiths), who have taken to scouring online blowout sales and celebrity tabloid mags, consider joining forces to decide on a company to buy. But when shiny, happy Kitty blabs that two decades ago their parents didn’t want her to outshine the business-minded Sarah (they didn’t loan her money to start a magnetic poetry biz), the sensitive Sarah gets mad.
This leads to a rehash of past sisterly squabbles about jelly shoes and Sarah’s passive aggressive behavior, but by episode’s end the gals patch things up over a bottle of “Apology” wine, with Sarah eventually deciding to buy Nora’s radio station and Kitty deciding to go back to Wexley to teach.
Family matriarch Nora (Sally Field) not only found her niche as a radio host but she may have found something more: the dashing- and very tall- psychiatrist Dr. Karl (John Terry), who weeds through some of the Walker family dirty laundry to help Nora sort things out. He also dubs Nora “Noradrenaline”. Oh my. Dr. Karl tells Nora she needs “a friend”- and he’s just the man for the job. He doesn’t mention if that comes with benefits.
Meanwhile, Kevin (Matthew Rhys) who is still smarting over Scotty’s (Luke Macfarlane) infidelity, gets a jolt when his niece , Paige, who is practically all growed up now (when did that happen? Oh yeah, the “year” thing!) visits. While helping Paige with a debate project, the feuding couple is forced to talk, with Kevin admitting he’s afraid to let Scotty back in. We could kind of already tell that, after Scotty’s incessant apologies have fallen on deaf ears. In the end Scotty tells Kevin the obvious solution to their problems: “You could forgive me.”
And in an entirely Gilles Marini- free episode, next week look for plenty of him when his hot tamale mom visits – and no one’s man is safe (not even hot nurse, Annie’s!)
“Brothers and Sisters” airs on Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. on ABC.
