Season four of the hit ABC show “Brothers & Sisters” ended with a fatal car crash that left Robert in a coma and Holly critically injured with severe memory loss. As season five began we watched Kitty struggle with the decision to finally end her husband’s life support and begin the painful process of moving on without him and raising their son alone.
Holly’s Recovery Process
Since the accident Holly has made a strong physical recovery but her memory still leaves most of her past in a blur. Even though he can’t be with Rebecca Justin (Dave Annable) has felt a need to support her family and do whatever he can to help her mom recover. This week’s episode, “Resolved,” shows Justin taking Holly to one of her therapy appointments and meeting Holly’s nurse, Annie.
David has cared for Holly everyday but in “Resolved” we see the toll it is taking on him. A recovering drug addict himself, Justin sees signs that make him think David may have relapsed, and he’s right. In his turmoil David tells Justin, “She doesn’t remember how she felt about me, she doesn’t remember being engaged…she’s just gone.” Justin ends up going to NA meetings with David.
Kevin & Scotty on the Mend?
Kevin and Scotty’s are still reeling from Scotty’s admission that he cheated. While at first Kevin (Matthew Rhys) puts all the blame on Scotty, he realizes he is also responsible for the demise of their relationship. “Resolved” forces him and Scotty to come together to help Paige with a school debate project and tensions flare as the two argue while attempting to put on a happy face for their niece. Paige is more than a little obvious in her not so subtle efforts to get her uncles back together. In the end Kevin decides he still loves Scotty (Luke Macfarlane) and Paige takes all the credit for repairing the relationship.
Jobs For Kitty & Sarah
Kitty and Sarah are now looking for jobs and this week they decide to search for work together. Yet another blow up occurs when Kitty (Calista Flockhart) mentions that their parents refused to give her a loan years back for a business idea and innocently lets it slipped that Nora had told her, “Business is Sarah’s thing.” In typical Walker-drama fashion Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) takes that to mean her parents believed business was the only thing she was good at and didn’t want Kitty to ‘outshine’ her. The sisters spend the rest of the episode bickering like 12-year-olds.
Nora’s New Career
Season five created all sorts of changes for the show’s matriarch. When a local radio producer witnesses a classic Nora Walker moment as the mom lets loose her opinion on each of her grown children the interchange led to Nora landing her own show giving ‘motherly’ advice to callers. This week she meets Karl West, a fellow radio personality.
Nora (Sally Field) vents to Karl about how worried and stressed she is about her children and gets angry when Karl simply advises her to let it go and let them fix their own problems. Now, as right as Karl may be, we all know this very action has been a near impossibility for Nora Walker in the past. But alas, by the episode’s end Nora comes to the same conclusion – she can support and love her children but she can’t live their lives or fix their problems.
Hope for Holly’s memory remains as bits and pieces seem to be coming back little by little. She also tells Justin that while she’s very grateful for his help, it’s time for him to move on. Justin takes the advice to heart and asks Annie out.
Kitty and Sarah make up over a bottle of Chardonnay. Though, they wisely decide not to go into business together after all. Kitty reveals that Wexley University has offered her a series of guest lectures. Sarah excitedly says, “Oh my God they’re going to worship you. You could turn them all into nasty little republicans!” Meanwhile Sarah is ready to put in a bid on a media company but finds out that said company actually owns the radio station Nora works at. Can you say ‘drama?’
