Buffalo and the Western New York region have some spooky haunted houses and hayrides lined up for October 2010. Here are some of the biggest and best.
Screamers’ Hollow – on the grounds of the Sterling Renaissance Festival, 15385 Farden Rd. in Sterling, NY, taking place October 1st through 30th (all Fridays and Saturdays, plus Sunday, October 10th) from 7 to 11 p.m. Attractions include the Terror Town Hayride, the haunted outdoor maze Slaughterhouse Asylum, and the haunted outdoor trail Terror on the Boggs (all deemed appropriate for ages 8 and up). Fright Fest – Darien Lake Theme Park Resort, located at 9993 Allegheny Rd. in Darien Center, presents Fright Fest, Fridays through Sundays from September 24th through October 17th. Hours for Fright Fest are Fridays 6 to 10 p.m., Saturdays noon to 10 p.m., and Sundays noon to 8 p.m. Tickets are $29.99 (Manic Mansion is an additional $3). Nightmare Hayride on Sommerville St. – this scary hayride takes place at 6319 Sommerville Valley Rd. in Ellicottville (home of the Ellicottville Rodeo) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights in October, from the 1st through the 24th, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. each night. The Hayride is a 25-minute long tractor-drawn hayride followed by a haunted maze and haunted barn. The entire experience takes less than 45 minutes. Tickets are $15 each, kids under 3 are free. Haunted Fortress – the annual Halloween event at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown takes place Saturday, October 16th and Saturday, October 23rd. The Fort is known to be haunted, and the Haunted Fortress tour takes you through the Fort’s haunted history. Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased in advance. Lockport Haunted Caves – discover the eerie mysteries and spooky creatures of the Lockport underground during the Haunted Cave Tours, Thursday through Saturday, October 14th through 16th, Thursday through Sunday, October 21st through 24th, and Tuesday through Saturday, October 26th through 30th, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on weeknights and Sundays and 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Tours start at 2 Pine St. (the old City Hall building); tickets are $12 for the Walking Tour, $17 for both the tour and the Boat Ride. Frightworld – located at 3060 Sheridan Dr. in Amherst (the TJ Maxx plaza at Sheridan Dr. and Niagara Falls Blvd.), Frightworld allows visitors to explore five haunted houses under one roof. Tickets are $23 for all five haunted houses, or for $7 more, you can purchase the Frightpass and avoid the long lines (Fridays and Saturdays only). Terror Technologies Extreme Haunted House – this free Haunted House takes place at 439 Tremaine Ave. in Kenmore. The haunt is open from 6 to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 22nd and 23rd, and Wednesday through Sunday, October 27th through 31st. While the haunt is free, drop boxes will be out for donations to Make-A-Wish. There will also be a clothing drive to benefit Hearts for the Homeless and a canned food drive to benefit the Food Bank of WNY. Your Final Fear – Hamburg Fairgrounds’ Showplace and Bazaar buildings, 5600 McKinley Pkwy. in Hamburg (use McKinley entrance near Clark St.). Your Final Fear is open through Sunday, October 31st (dates and times vary – check website for complete schedule). Admission is $21 for all four haunted houses; $2 discount coupons are available at Western New York Mighty Taco locations (coupons not valid on Saturdays). There will be a “Kids Lights On” special on Saturday, October 23rd, Sunday, October 24th, Saturday, October 30th, and Sunday, October 31st from 1 to 5 p.m.; admission is $6.
