If you are looking to create a fun conversation piece in a casual room, turn your ordinary coffee table into a chalk board table. This fun spin on a standard coffee table is inexpensive to create, and is great for friends, children, and family.
Coffee Table Preparation
Pick out a coffee table that has a solid surface, preferably made of wood. Sectional table tops will not work as well for creating a chalk board table top. Sand the table top with an orbital sander to remove the finish of the table completely. Clean the table top off with a damp, clean rage to remove any dust or debris. This is very important or the next step will not work.
Turning the Table Top Into a Chalk Board
Using a paint roller, paint the table top with chalk board paint. This type of paint requires at least 3 coats and will need about 1-4 hours between coats to dry depending on the humidity and air temperature. When applying the paint with the roller, you must make sure that there are no bubbles in the paint. The bubbles will create small voids that when written across with flake the surface of the paint off.
Painting the edges of the table may also be desirable, but avoid it if the edge is decorative as sanding the finish coat off can be a long and tedious process. Instead, use painter’s tape to create a defined edge that once the paint is dried, can be removed to reveal smooth clean lines.
Because this is such a social gathering spot and is really promoting group activities, the best shape for this table is round. This way everyone can see what everyone is doing. Perfectly square tables also work well for this type of application.
Just about any shape will do, but perfect circles and squares are the most conducive to the social aspect of creating this unique piece of furniture.
Chalk board coffee tables are a unique spin on the norm and will create a fun gathering place for you and your family. Even if you never actually write on it, you will never need a coaster for your glass again.
