I thought it would be neat to discuss one of my passions, and that is how to make different shapes of cakes. Have you ever wanted to be creative with your child’s birthday cake, but did not have the required shapes of pans to bake them? Well good news, I am going to show how to make various shapes of cakes, just by using the utensils and pans you have right in your kitchen. There will be no special tools to buy.
The heart cake is one of my all time favorites to make. It is so easy and fun to make and goes with all sorts of occasions. To make a heart cake, all you will need is one 9″ inch round pan and one 8″ inch square pan. You make your cakes according to the package directions and let cool. While the cakes are cooling, you can make your foundation. The heart cake is a pretty large cake and will not fit onto most serving platters, so you will have to make your own. I just use a piece of cardboard, cut into a square, and wrap tin foil over the top of it. Now you can use tissue paper of different colors or even saran wrap. I know at different times of the year, especially around the holidays, you can get saran wrap in different colors. But the way you make your foundation will depend greatly upon what occasion you are making the cake for. Now that you have your foundation made and your cakes are cooled, you can start to begin constructing your heart cake. To construct your cake, you will need the 8″inch square cake and turn it so it is in the shape of a diamond on your foundation. You will then need to cut your round cake in half and place each half at the top of the diamond and wall la you now have made a heart. It’s that easy, no special heart cake pan to buy and you have now just created a creative style cake. Decorate however you like and enjoy! I have made this cake a dozen of times for several different occasions. Kids flip over it at cake walks and the last time I baked one of these was for my daughter’s fourth grade class. I actually made little four inch squares and circles and taught the kids how to make their own little heart cake. It was a great party success.
Teddy Bear Cake
The teddy bear is a very cute style cake and is great, especially for baby showers. It is very simple to make, but does require more creativity than a heart cake does.To make a teddy bear cake, you will need two 9″ rounds and 6 cupcakes. Make the round cakes and cupcakes according to the package directions and let cool. The teddy bear cake is another large cake, so I use a foundation that consists of a piece of cardboard, cut into a rectangle, and cover it with tin foil. Now once your cakes and cupcakes are cooled, you can now begin to construct your teddy bear.To make a teddy bear, you will need to place your two round cakes on top of each other, length wise on your foundation. Then you will place four of your cupcakes; 2 for the arms (front paws) and two for the feet (back paws). Then you will take another cupcake and cut it in half and place each half on the top round for its ears. Your last cupcake is used for its nose and when I place its nose, I actually cut the top off of the cupcake and only use just the bottom part. This is just so the teddy bear doesn’t get teased, by his cake peers, for having such a big nose.Well by now, you should have a cake that shows a great resemblance to a teddy bear. You can decorate anyway you like and like I said before, it is great for occasions, such as baby showers or birthday parties. I have made this cake a dozen times for baby showers, in which I use baby toys (i.e. rattle and pacifier) to accent its decoration style to fit the occasion.
This is a really fun and extremely easy cake to make. All you will need is eight or more cupcakes, depending upon how long you want your snake to be.To construct this cake, arrange your cupcakes, in a connecting manner, in the shape of a snake. I have even found that you can make a bunt cake and cut it in half and connect the two halves in the shapes of a snake, as well. This is by far one of the easiest cakes you will ever make and is great for birthday parties and school functions where they have a cake walk as an activity.
The dirt cake is an all time favorite and kids just go nuts over it. To make a dirt cake, all you will need is a package of chocolate cake mix, some chocolate pudding, Oreo cookies, and some gummy worms.
Make the chocolate cake according to the package directions and let cake cool completely. While waiting for the cake to cool, you will want to crush up about 15 to 20 Oreos and mix in half of the Oreos in with the chocolate pudding. Reserve the other half for later. Now you are ready to construct the cake. The first thing you need to do is cover the chocolate cake with the chocolate pudding. This covering works better if you leave the cake in the pan and do not remove it. Once the cake is covered with chocolate pudding you will want to sprinkle the remaining Oreos over the top and decorate it with the gummy worms. To get the full effect of this cake you will want to stick the gummy worms in the cake as if worms were coming out of the ground. The dirt cake is fun and easy cake to make, plus has a lot of variations. In fact, I used to make this type of cake in little pails, which you can pick up in bulk, at places like Wal-Mart and online stores, such as the oriental trading company. I would use this idea for my daughter’s school b-day parties and it is a good cake for Easter to, using these little pails. All I would do is place eggs (jelly beans) hidden in grass (coconut dyed green) on top of the dirt layer.
