Cam Newton cheating allegations have provided another on-field distraction. But the Cam Newton cheating accusations may fade back for Auburn fans with four more victories. After the embattled Heisman favorite had his best performance yet last Saturday, it was a needed relief from the initial NCAA investigation reports. Whether a win over Georgia this week will do the same is unclear, although winning the Iron Bowl would help even more. Thanks to the NCAA investigation into Newton’s alleged cheating, however, winning it all could actually do more to hurt him in the long run.
For the second straight week, the Auburn quarterback has been embroiled in scandal. Of course, the initial NCAA investigation was about someone else making a cash offer on his behalf. Whether it was true or not, no one has proved that the agent wasn’t acting alone.
In the case of these rumors, he is being accused of wrongdoing on his own. Back in Florida, everyone already knew that he was accused of possessing a stolen laptop. Now, according to FOX Sports, he has been alleged of cheating on tests.
FOX’s source claims that he was on the verge of expulsion, but he transferred out of Florida beforehand. If he had gotten expelled, it could have made it harder for him to get a new football scholarship. At the least, the likes of Auburn and Mississippi State might have not been so anxious to get him – or pay for him.
While the initial NCAA investigation has confirmed names and sources, like John Bond and Kenny Rogers, the reports of Newton’s cheating have unnamed sources. This has led some to believe that Urban Meyer himself, or someone else at Florida, leaked these records to damage Newton. Since the Gators could face the Tigers in next month’s SEC title game, it makes things more suspect.
In the meantime, the investigation over the pay-for-play accusations is taking a new turn. ESPN now reports that Newton and his father said in phone calls that they chose Auburn because “the money was too much.” However, their sources are two more recruiters for Mississippi State, which may not do much to lessen the conspiracy theories out there.
Auburn fans are likely convinced that Florida and Mississippi State are slandering Newton out of revenge, or jealousy. These stories didn’t break before he and the Tigers got this hot, so the timing is suspicious. It may also be fair to ask if the rumors would have broken if the NCAA investigation didn’t leak first.
In the long run, success for Newton and the Tigers could be a bad thing. If they don’t win the Heisman or national championship, the allegations could fade faster. But if they do, then everyone will wonder if they are tainted for a long time to come at this rate.
