Lately, in the news, parents in Potrero Hill are constantly bombarded with information about McDonald’s Toys and their kids. Lots of students throughout the district are writing essays about McDonald’s and how they should change their policies. Plenty of talk is going around about kids and nutrition.
Potrero Hill likes to get out and actively exercise with its kids. After all, we have a great park right around the corner. However, when children get online to access nutrition information from their school district, they will find nothing. When students go to the Unified School District page for San Francisco, they have the option of clicking on a Student Nutrition Department. It would be a great resource, but the link does not work.
In the meantime, we are faced with teaching our children at about nutrition. If our children use the public school lunch program, they may not be learning these kinds of ideas. For this reason, we need to remember to include nutrition education that reflects the diverse food options available in a city like San Francisco.
For now, parents can look at the USDA website for more information about how to properly educate their children.
