My wife and I shared a hotel room with some friends a few years back. We were attending a convention and decided to save a few dollars by sharing a room. We never made it through the night. By 2 am, we were cat napping in the lobby hallway on a couch. The fella in the other bed was so loud it was impossible to sleep.
Snoring is one of the unfortunate realities of life. Most of us do it to some degree and generally speaking, the older we get the worse the condition gets. Like our friends, snoring can place a lot of stress on yours and your spouses life. When individuals can’t get sleep, they get irritable during the day, they make mistakes at work. This can lead up to family arguments and poor choices.
Snoring is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Truth be known, snoring kills. 1 out of 6 individuals have a severe health snoring problem. This problem is caused by the relaxation of the muscles in the back of the throat and tongue while sleeping which in turn blocks the airway. This blockage cuts off breathing causing a person to momentarily wake up. It can literally happen hundreds of times per night.
So if you are thinking that your spouse will quit if you wake them up, you are wrong. Within a few moments they are back at it. Your best bet is to move to another room. Yes, and close the door.
Snoring can take on a character all itself and it discriminates against no one. Male, female, old or young you can snore. There are all types of snorers. There is the short little snort, the intermediate assortment of snorts and, of course, the violent chainsaw type of snoring.
Worst than the noise is the serious health issues that snoring can lead to. There can be health issues with sleeping, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, weight gain, heart failure and stroke. Some of these can lead to death.
So what can you do to stop snoring besides having your spouse move to another room? People have had expensive surgery. They have used nasal band aid strips. The latest novelty is a head strap, that keeps the mouth closed. A special designed pillow that keeps your airway open. There are also natural remedies as well. You can try herbal pills, acupuncture and acupressure devices. Recently work has been done with a sleep apnea machine. It can be highly affective in dealing with snoring.
Each individual, with a snoring problem has to find what works best for them. This is best accomplished by using a professional. Regardless of what you try, take it seriously, because it can lead to death.
