Candy canes and peppermint sticks; they’re basically the same thing. One has a crook at the end and the other doesn’t. They’re both beautiful, though, with their red and white stripes that simply scream “Christmas”. Most people love the striped peppermint candies but few people know that you can use them to make all sorts of Christmas decorations for your house!
Whether you buy traditional peppermint sticks, or unusual flavors and colors, the simple sticks can be made into vases for your poinsettias or holders for other things. Use the ones without the crooks in them, and another object from around your house, and soon you’ll have planters, vases, centerpieces and more. Instead of real peppermint sticks you can also use plastic versions from a craft store or dollar-theme store. They’re often cheaper than the real candy canes and look just as nice.
Use an empty frosting cup to make one type of vase. Wrap a rubber band around it then begin attaching the candy canes. The rubber band should be small enough so that it won’t slide off the cup. Pull the rubber band out and slide a candy stick behind it. Do this again and again until you’ve added the peppermint sticks all the way around the cup. Tie a ribbon around the rubber band to conceal it and add a beautiful touch to the finished vase.
Make a square version of the vase and you can create a candy cane planter or centerpiece. A cardboard box will do the trick. Simply wrap the rubber band around the box, slide the candy sticks in behind it, and finish with a bow around the rubber band.
Using normal things from around your house you can make a huge assortment of the unusual decorations. The boxes, cups or other items you use don’t have to be as tall as the candy canes themselves. Whatever object you use, though, should be at least somewhat shorter than the peppermint sticks. Objects which are even half the size of the candy canes will work fine to make assorted and useful decorations.
Set the candy cane cups, vases, planters and other things nearly anywhere in the house. Cover a cardboard box with the peppermint sticks and set it in the bathroom to hold hand towels or bath and body products. Or, wrap an empty nut can with the candy canes and make a holder for kitchen implements. There are many different uses for the red and white striped décor for Christmas!
