Car Free Day is Sept. 22. The city of Chicago has special offers available to those people who take the pledge and go without their car for the day. These special offers will be available from: Active Trans, Argo Tea, CTAgifts.com, Chicago Water Taxi, I-GO Car Sharing, .ING Direct Cafe, Sports Authority, and State Street Plaza Company (http://www.activetrans.org/carfree).
Some of these specials include saving $10 off any purchase of $50 by taking the pledge from Sports Authority, Ride Chicago Water Taxi for $2 all day on Sept. 22, and saving $1 off Teapot Grains, Tea Bite or Teanie Panini at Argo Tea all week.
There is also a special Car Free Day Rally and Ride Event that is taking place. It is being celebrated by Break the Gridlock. It starts at 6 p.m. at Daley Plaza and ends at the Bike Winter kick off meeting at the Billy Goat on Madison at 7p.m. (http://carfreechicago.com/blog/1286).
My entire family depends on the car to get from school and orthodontist appointments, to play practice, and after-school sports. But tomorrow, we will be creative in our ways of getting around. Instead of driving the kids back and forth to two different schools, all three of them are going to ride their bikes. It will not only save gas, and keep the environment a little cleaner, but it will also be good exercise.
My oldest, who commutes to college, is going to carpool with two of his friends instead of riding alone. They are actually going to do it all week.
After school, instead of driving my three youngest to their different activities, my 14 year old said that he would like to ride his skate board to and from play practice. My twins said they will roller skate to and from a friend’s house.
During the day, I am going to walk to the local coffee shop to meet friends instead of driving. Then, I will walk over to the grocery store to pick up a few things I am lacking. I will bring my back pack to carry my goods home in.
Later in the evening, I am attending a party with a group of friends. Four of us are going to carpool. This will give us a chance to save gas, and catch up with each other before we get to the party.
I hope tomorrow will bring change for me in the days, weeks, and years to come. I hope to be less reliant on my car, and more reliant on alternative ways to get to where I need to be. By walking, riding my bike, or carpooling, I can get exercise, save gas, and keep the planet a little more green.
