Your baby is off to college! Your tears have dried, you’ve gotten used to the idea (a bit), but you still want to take care of that almost grown up who you swore you just brought home from the hospital yesterday. One way to show your child that you care and are thinking of them is the care package. Nothing makes a college student happier than a big old box of goodies from home. Here are some ideas of what to put in that care package that will be sure to bring a smile to their face:
College kids love music. If you’re a hip and cool parent, and know what music your child enjoys, sending them the new CD is a great idea. You can also purchase gift cards so your student can download their favorite songs online.
Cards and Pictures
A great idea for a care package is cards and pictures. Send snapshots of recent family gatherings or community events. This is most important for students who are very far away from home and are only able to visit a few times a year. So send pictures of grandma’s 75th birthday party, of their little sister’s basketball game, or dad’s funny attempts to trim the front hedges. Have other family members drop notes, cards, or (especially great if there are little ones in the family) homemade cards or drawings.
College kids love to look great and hate doing laundry, and are usually broke. So when the weather gets chilly, drop a sweatshirt in the care package, or pick up a t shirt from their favorite store at the mall and include in the package. Just remember to keep the receipt – college kids are also picky about what they wear!
A train ticket home
As much as kids love college, they love coming home to mom and dad. Find a weekend that your child can come home for a visit, them surprise them with a round trip bus or train ticket. Even better, send tickets for two, and have them bring a friend. It’ll be a great opportunity for you to get to know one of their college buddies, and a change for them to show off their hometown.
And of course, last but certainly not least, food. College students love food, and dining hall fare is usually not that great. Ideal for care packages are munchies that a good for snacking during all-night study sessions, like trail mix, candy, or cookies. Homemade treats, like brownies and cookies are always a huge hit – just be sure to send plenty, as the whole dorm will want a taste! Another good food idea is to send a fresh fruit basket. Some universities even have an on-campus service that will deliver a fresh goodie basket to your student’s dorm room.
So get packing! Your college student will love you for it!
